Monitoring and Evaluation

Governors are expected to make regular visits to school, including during the school day for the purposes of monitoring and evaluation.  In belonging to DSAT, a great deal of monitoring is carried out by the representatives of the Trust, such as the Academy Improvement Director, Chief Executive, Finance and HR Teams.  This removes some of the burden of monitoring from the Local Governing Board but their skill in holding the academy leaders to account will be seen in the way that they receive these reports, support and challenge the findings and supplement this with their own evaluation activity.  The setup of the Trust is such that the majority of local governor time can be focussed on monitoring and evaluating teaching, learning and the curriculum, rather than spending too much time being concerned with the business functions of the academy.

 

Whenever visits to school do take place, they should always be conducted in line with correct protocol.  All school policies, particularly safeguarding policies, should be adhered to when making visits.  Governors should have a sufficient Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

 

Academy visits should explore the impact and effectiveness of the policies and procedures of the school and the extent to which the Academy Improvement Plan is being put into action.  These visits will enable local governors and board directors to offer appropriate support and challenge to the academy as it looks to develop further.  Visits should generally be by arrangement and for a specific purpose unless the academy operates a different approach to this.

 

Academy visits should be:

  • Arranged in advance;
  • For an agreed length of time;
  • For an specific reason which is shared with participants;
  • Prepared in advance;
  • To agreed success criteria;
  • A part of the monitoring and evaluation cycle of the school and Local Governing Board;
  • To demonstrate that governors are interested and involved in the work of the academy to parents, pupils and staff.

 

Governors should follow these guidelines:

  • Do not behave in such a way as to give the impression that you are conducting an inspection;
  • Follow safeguarding protocols at all times;
  • Be punctual - start and finish times;
  • Sign in the visitors' book;
  • Talk to staff, children and parents where appropriate.
  • Maintain a clear focus for your visit;
  • Ensure that questioning is always appropriate;
  • Avoid making judgments about matters which are in the professional domain. If anything you see in your visit raises serious concerns, talk to the headteacher in confidence.
